Intro: Sports massage can be useful for people who place regular physical demands on their bodies, as well as those dealing with everyday muscular tension. Treatment is adapted to the areas affected and your current activity level. These are the presentations we most commonly treat.
Muscular soreness following training or physical activity can make normal movement feel uncomfortable. Massage may help you manage muscular tightness while you recover.
Repetitive training, prolonged sitting, or demanding physical activity can contribute to areas of persistent muscular tension that affect comfort and movement.
Tight or overworked muscles may limit your available movement. Targeted massage can form part of a broader approach to maintaining comfortable mobility.
Regular training can place repeated demands on specific muscle groups. Sports massage may help you manage muscular fatigue between demanding sessions.
Some active individuals use sports massage as part of their preparation for training, competition, or other physically demanding activities, depending on timing and individual needs.
Regular sports massage can be incorporated into an exercise routine to help you stay aware of areas of tension and maintain comfortable movement.
Sports massage can be adapted to the muscle groups experiencing the greatest training or physical demands. Your therapist will select appropriate techniques and pressure based on your symptoms, activity level, and treatment goals.
Targeted work for muscular tension around the neck and upper shoulders, particularly where training, desk work, or repetitive activity contributes to tightness.
Massage focused on the surrounding musculature to address areas of tension and muscular fatigue that can develop through exercise or prolonged physical activity.
Useful for active individuals experiencing tightness around the shoulder girdle following strength training, sport, or repetitive upper-body movements.
Treatment can target commonly overloaded muscles around the hips and glutes, helping address muscular tension that may affect comfortable movement.
Sports massage can focus on the major muscle groups of the thigh following running, cycling, strength training, or other demanding lower-body activity.
Targeted techniques can help manage muscular tightness and fatigue in the calves following running, jumping, walking, or other repetitive lower-limb activity.

Our physiotherapists combine knowledge of musculoskeletal rehabilitation, exercise, and human movement with hands-on treatment techniques. Sports massage is delivered with attention to your activity levels, muscular demands, and individual treatment goals.

Every sports massage session is adapted to your current physical demands rather than following a standard routine. We consider where you are experiencing tension, how you train or exercise, and what you want to achieve from treatment.

We consider your training routine, sporting activity, work demands, and areas that regularly experience muscular stress or fatigue.
Before treatment, we identify areas of tightness, tenderness, reduced mobility, or muscular overload to determine where treatment should be focused.
Pressure and massage techniques are adapted to the tissues being treated, your tolerance, and whether the session is focused on recovery, maintenance, or preparation.
Treatment focuses on specific muscle groups rather than applying the same technique across the entire body, allowing the session to reflect your individual needs.
Where appropriate, massage is combined with movement advice or simple mobility strategies to help you maintain comfortable movement between sessions.
We review how you respond to treatment and adjust future sessions according to changes in muscular tension, activity levels, training demands, and your treatment goals.
Sports massage should be more than a routine massage. Our approach combines hands-on treatment with an understanding of movement, training demands, and musculoskeletal function.
Your session is delivered by an HCPC-registered physiotherapist with 10+ years across the NHS, private and sports settings — not solely a massage therapist. The hands-on work sits inside a real understanding of anatomy, injury and movement.
Our clinicians hold dedicated qualifications in sports and soft tissue therapy on top of their physiotherapy training.
If your "tight muscle" is really a joint, nerve or overload problem, we identify it on the spot and, where appropriate, move straight into a proper assessment. You're already in the right place; no separate referral, no wasted trip.
Massage rarely delivers lasting change on its own. We can pair it with hands-on therapy, tailored exercise, and acupuncture so you get a result that holds, not just a good hour on the couch.

They overlap and use many of the same firm techniques, but a deep tissue massage is usually a general, often full-body treatment aimed at chronic tension and knots. A sports massage is more targeted: it focuses on the specific muscles loaded by your activity, often adds stretching, and is geared toward recovery, movement and preventing niggles. As physios, we tailor which approach or blend suits what you actually need and matches your goals/expectations.
No. A relaxation or Swedish massage is gentle and aimed at unwinding. A sports massage works deeper and more specifically into muscle groups under strain, with more communication throughout so we can target the right areas. It’s therapeutic rather than purely relaxing.
It can involve firm pressure and some areas may feel tender, but it should stay within a level you can tolerate, we describe it as a “good” discomfort. Pressure and technique are adjusted to you throughout, so tell your therapist if anything is too much.
Wear or bring loose, comfortable clothing like shorts and a vest we’ll only expose the area being treated, and you’re always covered otherwise. We start with a few questions about your activity, symptoms and goals, assess the relevant muscles, then treat. Expect to give feedback as we go to ensure its tailored to your preference.
There’s no fixed schedule. It depends on your training volume, symptoms and how you respond. Some people benefit from a session every few weeks during heavy training, others come as needed. We’ll suggest a realistic rhythm for you rather than sell a package you don’t need.
Both have a place, but they’re different. A pre-event session is lighter and prepares the muscles; a post-event or recovery session is deeper and aids recovery. We’ll time and adapt it around your training or competition.
Not at all. Plenty of our clients aren’t athletes, they’re dealing with desk-related tension, gym soreness, or general tightness from a busy, active life. The “sports” in the name refers to the techniques, not who it’s for.
Being straight with you: the evidence is strongest for short-term reduction in muscle soreness and a temporary improvement in how freely you can move. It’s less convincing as a way to boost performance or “flush out” anything. Claims like that aren’t supported. Where it genuinely helps, we’ll use it; where you’d be better served by exercise or hands-on therapy, we’ll tell you.
Sports massage can ease muscular symptoms, but it isn’t a substitute for assessing an actual injury. The advantage here is that your therapist is a physiotherapist — so if something needs more than massage, we can assess and treat it in the same place, rather than sending you elsewhere.
Sports massage may be useful for muscular symptoms, but it is not a substitute for an assessment of an acute or significant injury. If you have an injury, a physiotherapy assessment may be more appropriate.
Speak with our experienced physiotherapy team and find the right treatment for your condition, whether you prefer an appointment at our Beckenham clinic or a home visit.
Whether you’re dealing with training-related muscle tension, post-exercise soreness, or simply want to maintain comfortable movement, our sports massage team can tailor treatment to your needs.
